Creative Writing Schools

There is often so much emphasis on the "right" way to read and write, that the creative process doesn’t always get as much chance to blossom as it should. School age children spend a lot of time working on things like grammar, punctuation, and spelling, which are all quite necessary to become good writers. They also spend a lot of time on using writing to respond to text. They learn to echo the question by repeating some of the question in their answers. They learn to research topics and then use that information to write an informative nonfiction piece. They learn to make outlines, use proper transitions to start paragraphs, and write summaries. These are all important pieces to becoming a well-balanced writer.

What we cannot forget is how important it is to allow plenty of time for creative writing. Children need to be given time to dream, to explore, and to imagine. Then they need time to put it all down on paper. It is the creative writing process that is often the favorite among students and the one that can foster internal motivation to write like no other kind of writing can. Teachers can help children to experiment with different kinds of creative writing, like stories, plays, poems, and even comic strips.

Parents can encourage creative writing at home by helping their children choose a writing journal, by providing a quiet space for them to write, and most importantly, by giving them a chance to share their writing. Sharing in their writing experiences helps teach children about self-confidence and being proud of their work.
